Goals of the Western Canada Games Council (the Council)
- To be the principal authority responsible for drafting policy for Ministerial approval and implementation, rules and regulations as it pertains to size and scope, hosting rotation, financial framework, long term planning and membership in the Western Canada Summer Games
- To ensure that the guiding principles of the Western Canada Games are reflected in all aspects of the program.
- To be responsible for continual evaluation of the Games in conjunction with the host province/territory.
- To be responsible for the selection of sports to the Games.
- To be responsible for hosting standards and host selection of the Games.
- To approve the sport-specific Technical Packages.
- To ensure a fair and equal competition.
- To support a harassment free experience for all participants, officials and volunteers of the Games.
- To set basic requirements for each Host Society, including final report and finances.
- To unequivocally oppose any unethical practice to enhance performance.
- To establish committees as required.
- To develop and regularly update the Western Canada Games Council Handbook.
- To develop and regularly update the Western Canada Summer Games Staging Manual.
- To coordinate a debrief meeting to provide recommendations to future host societies.
Structure
The following structure of the Council was approved by Ministers at their meeting in August 2005.
Terms of Reference:
- One (1) representative from each of the provincial/territorial governments for a total of seven (7)
- One (1) representative from the host province/territory to serve as chairperson, appointed by the Minister Responsible for Sport (non-voting, unless also acting as province/territory representative)
- One (1) non-voting representative from the Host Society responsible for the Games
- Total nine (9) members
Appointment to the Western Canada Games Council is for a term of 4 years, or until the conclusion of the current Games. It is preferred that jurisdictions appoint separate individuals to sit on the Council and the Technical Committee.
The Western Canada Games Council meets at the call of the Chair.
Western Canada Games Council Technical Committee
The following structure of the Council was approved by Ministers at their meeting in August 2005.
- To develop and review sport-specific Technical Packages, including working with the various provincial/territorial sport organizations to ensure accuracy of content
- To approve all sport schedules for the Games
- To respond and rule on eligibility and sport technical issues
- To provide guidance to the Host Society in matters related to sport
- To address all technical appeals that are non field of play issues
- To coordinate the sport selection process for upcoming Games on behalf of the Western Canada Games Council
Structure
